Yoga Classes

Whether you are travelling or resident, Yoga is a great way to calm the mind, get fit, and relax and strengthen muscles.

There are many practitioners in London, so this is a very selective list of teachers who have been recommended to me by friends and family.

Obviously the fact that a Yoga teacher is not on this list is not an indication of their competence or otherwise - nor is their inclusion a guarantee of competence or your satisfaction!

By the way, I have tried several Yoga teachers and classes over the years, both at home and while travelling. As far as home is concerned, well, I live in Somerset, and I can recommend two Yoga teachers, one each in Somerset and Wiltshire. They are both based in or near Frome - Ben Parkes and and Miranda Falconer. Both very experienced Yoga teachers, and they are my two favourite Yoga teachers at the moment. Ben also does workshops and a Yoga teacher training course. He teaches Hatha Yoga, which is described here.

Now, back to London.....

Covering all levels from beginners to power yoga, the IndabaYoga studio is highly recommended. They have almost 30 teachers, and a constant flow of classes and students. You might be most interested in the beginners' classes, of which it's fair to say you can start your yoga journey in a nurturing and helpful environment with students of similar ability so there is no need for you to be nervous. And you don't need to bring anything with you to the classes, just your bare feet, some loose fitting clothing and perhaps most important, a willing attitude!

In these beginners' classes you will learn the basic foundation postures of yoga, along with the poses' names and the highly important alignment principles. As a yogi or yogini in training, you will the learn how to breath correctly, you will find ways to strengthen your body, you will increase your mobility and you'll find your confidence will increase. At the end of a class you should feel energised and at ease in body and mind. All new students are recommended to attend the beginners' classes or at the very least the 4 week "Basics" course - which will allow you to pick up the fundamentals of yoga in a nurturing and safe space.

Yoga Place E2 is a delightful yoga centre located in the heart of Bethnal Green, East London, where you can find a peaceful sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of London life. They offer a wide range of yoga classes, courses and weekend workshops plus a variety of excellent holistic therapies.

This studio has a very friendly atmosphere and welcomes students form any background - the entire range of Yoga practice is available from beginners to advanced.... young and old, and new and seasoned practitioners.

As to the style of yoga, well, everything seems to be covered! You can learn Ashtanga,  Dynamic, Hatha & Hatha Flow, Restorative Yoga, Tantric Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Iyengar plus many more.... and there seems to be a Meditation opportunity as well. For mothers and mothers to be, there are pre and post natal classes, yoga classes for mothers and babies (!) and hypnobirthing plus baby massage! At the other end of the age spectrum, there are classes for "Autumnal yoga" - I think they mean older people!

So, as you would expect, the staff are fully qualified and experienced and will always show the utmost care and sensitivity to the individual yogi or yogini. By understanding what you are capable of, and recognising your limitations such as injuries, the staff ensure you will always practice yoga within the limits of your physiology.

And if you have some experience, but you wish to learn more, a varied and stimulating programme of workshops and courses may be just the thing for you! The studio is located near Bethnal Green tube and close to the City (one stop from Liverpool Street Station).

By the way, the practice has a wonderful new Yoga Studio in Wales. It's located in St. Johns Church in the beautiful Swansea Valley of Clydach - which means Yoga and Therapies are available with the same love and care in Wales as well they are in London! is a forward looking practice which believes yoga needs to be accessible to all, based in the community - and obviously, inclusive and free from dogma!

From modest beginnings in Netil House the members of this practice are now to be found in a couple of studios in the East End of London. They say Stretch is where you can find expert teachers running strong dynamic yoga classes as well as the more relaxing restorative yoga.

This is a  family run company based in the community and its principles are about safety and connection - safety for you as a yoga practitioner and connection as in connecting with others in the community. This is a safe space which has branched out into many fabulous retreats around the world. That's great, but they also offer teacher trainings in Yoga for people who wish to broaden, share or explore their practise.

With an easy-going atmosphere but a serious approach to Yoga, there is room for fun! This is a very friendly place, without any holier-than-thou attitudes! Come and enjoy the community element because this studio truly is open to anyone!
