The Milestone Hotel and Apartments -
Kensington
While the impressive Prince Albert Suite, with
a wonderful open
fireplace, elaborately carved ceilings and four poster bed may set
the standard at this hotel, all the other rooms more than match up!
Each room is in fact a wonderful tribute to the taste and
intuition of the talented designers for the Red Carnation Group, who
are rapidly becoming one of the best hotel groups I know of. Indeed,
this hotel won the hotel of the year award 2007 from Travel and
Leisure (Conde Nast publishers). The discreet but attentive service,
the thoughtful extras, and the style and charm of the rooms add up
to an experience which is both elegant and luxurious. Each of the 45
rooms (there are also twelve suites and six long stay apartments
with access to hotel facilities) is elegantly furnished with fine fabrics,
antiques, fresh
flowers, and rare works of art, yet they are all strikingly
different: some are decorated more richly, and have a more intimate,
homely feel; others look out over the stunning views of Kensington
Palace and Gardens. The rooms are serviced twice a day, and the
hotel's attention to detail is clear - the maid is not there just to
clean and tidy, but to provide those items which will make your
visit a special one: home-made cookies,
bonbons, chilled mineral water, fruits in season, a weather forecast,
your complimentary newspapers, tasty canapés, candles in the bathroom,
and so forth. And while these things may be distracting enough to
make your stay a memorable one, there's still plenty of
up-to-the-minute technology to
keep you in touch, including a high-speed wireless internet
connection, movies on demand, interactive TV, and CD
jukebox.
The Milestone Apartments combine the luxury of the hotel with
privacy and independence. The location is beautiful, and offers
access to
the hotel; there are six
individually designed and elegantly appointed two-bedroom
apartments, in most cases with terraces and balconies, which are
perfect for
guests who have arranged a long stay in London. The apartments provide you with a welcome grocery pack,
enabling you to be self-sufficient should you wish, but apartment guests
can also take advantage of all hotel services including round the
clock room service and the butler service.
Dining at The Milestone is also rather special. Whether you choose
Cheneston's with its fine mahogany furniture, the relaxing
Conservatory, or the fascinating split-level
Stables
Bar, you can be sure of
a relaxed
experience and superb food.
Chef David Smith and his team
serve the finest international cuisine and the best modern
British dishes. Whether your choice is creative new cuisine or traditional comfort foods,
or if you would like something special created for you, the team
will do its best to oblige. If you wish to order something not on
the menu, the kitchen will prepare it for you at any time, provided
the ingredients are available; the kitchen uses mostly organic and
locally sourced produced. Needless to say, there is a fine wine list, with
more than four hundred vintages, to accompany the excellent food.
There are other facilities available for your comfort, including the
elegantly panelled Park lounge and the fitness centre, with
up-to-the-minute resistance pool and
luxurious spa treatments. And best of all, perhaps, The Milestone is
only a few minutes'
walk from Kensington and Knightsbridge, and a short taxi ride will
take you to the West End. The Royal Albert Hall, and the finest
museums are also within easy reach.

Blakes Hotel, South Kensington, SW7
In the 1980s, in a pretty street in South
Kensington, Anouska Hempel transformed two substantial Victorian
mansions into a small luxurious boutique hotel by the name of Blakes.
It soon developed into a couture retreat to numerous A-list
celebrities. The hotel location is quiet and residential,
but within easy reach of every part of London that isn't. Nearby
Underground stations Gloucester Road and South Kensington provide
numerous public transport links, Kensington and Knightsbridge
upmarket shopping areas and West End entertainment are but a cab
ride away, and museums like the Science Museum, V&A, and National
History are within walking distance.
Blakes' 49 guest rooms and suites are each
individually designed, some classically and others modernist, some
in bold colour schemes and others in nothing but 'white on white',
yet all in sumptuous comfort and luxury. Blakes Bar and Restaurant present an eclectic à
la carte dinner menu featuring classic favourites like caviar and
foie gras, fashionable fad health foods and oriental fusions, while
for lunch, choices range from sandwiches and salads to burgers and
fries; the wine list features equal variation. Hotel guests opting
for in-room dining can choose from a room service menu featuring
hearty snacks and meals and indulgent 'guilty pleasures'. The
phenomenal Chinese Room adjacent to the restaurant makes for a very
special function room and Suite 007, the epitome of romantic chic,
is licensed for civil ceremonies.
In 2007, Blakes was sold to GuestInvest.
Individual rooms at Blakes are now for sale to private investors,
invited to make offers in excess of £1,000,000 per hotel room. Ownership gives entitlement to a number of nights' accommodation
each year, and a share in hotel revenue.

Kensington House Hotel - Kensington
This delightful 19th century townhouse situated just off Kensington
High Street
has
views over the charming mews houses and tree lined streets behind
the hotel, and over city rooftops towards Kensington High Street at
the front. The hotel has a relaxed environment, with informal but
extremely professional service in an atmosphere that encourages
calmness. The bedrooms are bright
and airy with the wonderful feature of large ornate windows; they
have new contemporary furnishings which add a fresh touch to classic
design. All
forty rooms are designed to ensure that comfort combines with
practicality, and whether you opt for double, twin, single or suite,
they all have an ensuite bathroom equipped with either bath or
shower and your own personal robe. The beds feature
crisp linen sheets and wonderfully
comfortable mattresses, so you're ensured of a good night's sleep.
The Tiger Bar is an ideal venue for coffee and drinks, and although
Kensington Gardens are just a gentle stroll away, you may prefer to
visit the high quality shops, restaurants and cultural attractions
that you can find nearby.
As
you would expect, you'll receive a warm welcome, and the hotel will
be the perfect base from which you can easily explore all that
London has to offer.
A tray of
refreshments is available in your room, and the hotel also offers
round the clock room service.

Dukes Hotel, St James's, SW1
Tucked away between Piccadilly,
Green Park and St. James's Park, Dukes Hotel is perhaps
to some extent a hidden treasure to those who don't know
it yet. This intimate and elegant boutique hotel is,
however, deservedly renowned with past and present
guests.
Yards from busy Piccadilly and
Green Park tube station, next to the beauty and peace of
both parks and within touching distance of the imposing
stature of Buckingham Palace as well as the hustle and
bustle of the West End, the five-star Dukes Hotel
provides a popular retreat to business travellers and
tourists.
The Dukes' spacious and elegant
guest rooms and suites are classically inspired yet
fairly recently refurbished and redecorated, equipped
with air conditioning, satellite TV, multiple phone
lines, private bar, personal safe, WiFi, and marble
bathrooms. Guests can rely on 24‑hour room service,
complimentary bottled water and newspapers, butler
service, clothes and shoe valeting, business services
and limousines by request.
The 'Marlborough', 'Sheridan' and
'Duke of Montrose' function rooms are available for
business meetings, private dining or other special
functions to serve 10 to 120 guests; the 'Marlborough'
is licensed for civil ceremonies.
The Dukes' health club provides
hotel guests facilities to exercise, with or without the
guidance of a personal trainer, and the incorporated spa
offers a variety of holistic treatments. The drawing
room and courtyard Zen garden are oases for relaxation.
No matter what happens outside,
inside the Dukes there always seems to be an ambiance of
quiet comfort, as afternoon tea is served in the
Conservatory, classic English dishes are served up in
the Dining Room or guests in the Dukes Bar are served
age-old cognacs or perfectly mixed Martinis.

Baglioni Hotel, Hyde Park Gate, SW7
The Baglioni Hotel London is a five-star London
boutique hotel with Italian origins, overlooking Kensington
Gardens. Its prime location is perfect for access to the park,
Kensington and Knightsbridge shopping, West End shopping, dining and
entertainment, and nearby Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and
museums (Natural History, Science, V&A).
Traditionally English on the outside, upon
entering, the Baglioni soon reveals its Mediterranean connection
through its contemporary but warm decor throughout. The interior of
communal areas is contemporary, but with twists of Italian baroque. Guest rooms and suites are spacious, draped in
luxury of soft fabrics in deep and warm colours, many have large
windows and some provide beautiful views of Kensington Gardens. Plasma TVs and high speed internet connection come as standard, room
service and full concierge services are available round the clock. Ensuite bathroom facilities feature wooden floors and copper
basins. Some of the suites have their own foyers.
The Brunello Bar & Lounge is open all hours for
coffee, light refreshments, pastries and light Italian meals. At
lunch time and in the evening, the fabulous Brunello Restaurant
serves deliciously fresh and honest à la carte Italian food. A function room benefiting from its own
separate entrance suits business meetings and private functions,
while the stunning Boutique 60 provides a great location suited to
parties or casual events.
Understandably, owners and management are proud
of their Italian heritage, so in‑room coffee-making facilities in
some suites constitute of an espresso machine rather than the
familiar kettle and sachets of instant coffee, and guests asking for
the hotel's chauffeur service may find themselves being picked up in
a Maserati.
